Tristan Jarry is right in the middle of the latest Edmonton Oilers goalie drama. On Friday, a report from the “2 Mutts Hockey” podcast on X claimed the Pittsburgh Penguins goalie was being traded to the Edmonton Oilers, with the Penguins keeping half of his salary. That sent Oilers fans into full panic and hype at the same time, as the team continues to search for help behind Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard. Not long after, bigger insiders stepped in and gave a very different update on where things really stand.
Elliotte Friedman says Tristan Jarry trade to Edmonton Oilers is “extremely complicated”
On Saturday night, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman spoke on Hockey Night in Canada and confirmed that the Edmonton Oilers do have “legitimate interest” in Tristan Jarry. But he also made it clear a deal is very hard to pull off right now.
Friedman said the main issue is money. Tristan Jarry is in the second year of a five-year contract worth $26.875 million, with a cap hit of $5.375 million per season.
Pittsburgh has “indicated it will not retain” salary, which makes it tough for the cap-tight Edmonton Oilers to fit his number without moving out a big contract.
He also added that the Oilers are not trying to dump Stuart Skinner.
Instead, they would like to pair Stuart Skinner with Tristan Jarry if a deal ever works, rather than swap one for the other.
That would mean even more cap juggling for Edmonton, which already has injury problems and little room to maneuver.
REPORT: The #LetsGoOilers have “legitimate interest” in trading for Penguins G Tristan Jarry.
The hurdles:
❌ Jarry signed through 2028 @ $5.375M
❌ PIT will not retain salary
❌ EDM cap strappedIs this the answer in net? 👇https://t.co/GWmtHXRMny

Ryan Rishaug and Pittsburgh Penguins updates slow down Tristan Jarry buzz
On Saturday morning, TSN reporter Ryan Rishaug poured cold water on the whole story. Posting on X, he said there were “no goaltending deals done for the Oilers despite some wild speculation otherwise” and added that, while things can always change, that was the status as of Friday night and Saturday morning.
So, as of now, there is interest from the Edmonton Oilers in Tristan Jarry, but no agreed trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Other outlets, including Sportsnet and The Hockey News, have echoed the same point: talks are possible, but nothing is in place and the cap math is a big hurdle.
Meanwhile, Tristan Jarry is having a strong season in Pittsburgh. The 30-year-old goalie is 9-2-0 with a 2.61 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage in the 2025–26 regular season, one of the best stretches of his career.
The Pittsburgh Penguins sit in the playoff race in the Metro Division and face the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center on Sunday. For now, Tristan Jarry is still their starter, and any move to the Edmonton Oilers remains only talk, not a done deal.
