Connor McDavid, captain of the Edmonton Oilers, signed a two-year, $25 million contract extension on October 6, 2025, keeping him with the team through the 2027-28 NHL season. The agreement holds his salary steady at $12.5 million per year and gives the Oilers some salary cap flexibility. In his announcement, McDavid said that a short-term deal allows him to focus on winning while maintaining financial flexibility for the future. Analysts and fans have lauded the move as team-friendly, smart, and evidence of his commitment to the Edmonton Oilers.

Just hours after the contract announcement, McDavid’s wife, Lauren Kyle, shared a touching moment on Instagram. She posted a photo of a beautiful floral arrangement sent by teammate Leon Draisaitl and his partner Celeste Desjardins. The note with the flowers read, “Congratulations! 2 extra years with our favourite people. We love you guys. Let’s win this thing! Love, Cel, Leon, and Bobo.” 

Lauren tagged both Draisaitl and Desjardins and added a teary-eyed emoji. She also shared a season hype reel from OilersNation showing McDavid in action and captioned it, “Season couldn’t start any sooner! Go Oilers!!” with blue and orange heart emojis. 

Emphasizing the friendship between McDavid, Draisaitl, and their partners, this motion revealed how close the team is inside the Edmonton locker room. The post received rather quick fan reaction praising the on-ice collaboration continued outside the arena.

McDavid opens up on why he chose a short deal

After signing the extension, Connor McDavid spoke about why he chose a shorter deal. “Two years makes a lot of sense. It gives us a chance to keep chasing what we’ve been building here with our core group, and it leaves a little bit of room to work with financially,” McDavid said. 

He added that winning remains the top goal, joking that his dog Leonard “won’t be going hungry” with the new contract. Oilers general manager Stan Bowman praised McDavid’s commitment, saying, “Connor’s dedication to our team and our city is unmatched.” 

As the NHL season of 2025-26 is on the horizon, McDavid and the Oilers are eager for their first Stanley Cup title since 1990, and fans are excited to see the star captain at the helm of the organization once again.
