Doug MacLean calls out Maple Leafs’ obsession with Max Domi, recommends Easton Cowan for third line

Former NHL general manager Doug MacLean spoke frankly about the Toronto Maple Leafs’ lineup choices on Sportsnet’s “Real Kyper & Bourne” show on Friday, October 17, 2025. MacLean questioned why the team continues to prioritize Max Domi, 30, over younger talent. He suggested that promising forward Easton Cowan should play as the third-line center, a crucial spot for playoff success. MacLean also mentioned that Scott Laughton could fill the fourth-line role, pointing to what he sees as a mismanaged lineup.

MacLean said he didn’t understand the Maple Leafs’ “obsession” with Max Domi. “Can Easton Cowan become another playoff type of guy that they desperately need?” MacLean asked during the show with Nick Kypreos, Justin Bourne, and Sam McKee. “My problem right now is why on the fourth line? Cowan is supposed to be your third-line guy, and now he’s on the fourth line with Domi. What do they owe Domi?”

So far in the 2025–26 season, Domi has played five games and has scored one goal in a 6-3 loss to Detroit on October 11, 2025, and has a rating of minus one. He is averaging 13 minutes 33 seconds of ice time, has 11 shots and a shooting percentage of 9.1%.

Last season, Domi scored eight goals, and 25 assists in 74 games, and had seven points in 13 games played in the playoffs. MacLean stated Cowan deserves a bigger role, but is still adjusting to the pace of the NHL.

After a game against the New York Rangers, Cowan told theleafsnation.com: “I just play the best I can and try my best. I made a couple of mistakes, it’s the way of the road sometimes. You learn from it and move on.” 

He added that consistency is one of the hardest parts of playing in the league. “I got high expectations, but it’s a tough league. Just try to be consistent each night.”

Toronto Maple Leafs coach praises Auston Matthews’ start

Meanwhile, Toronto Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube praised captain Auston Matthews, 28, for his strong start this season. 

Speaking with reporters on Friday, October 17, 2025, Berube said Matthews has been “solid” and “healthy” in all areas of play. 

Matthews has scored four goals and one assist in five games. Berube noted that while many focus on goals, Matthews’ overall game is key, especially after recovering from injuries last season.
