Shilo Sanders clears the air on Deion Sanders’ NFL coaching rumors after $54M deal

On October 17, 2025, Shilo Deion Sanders made a clear statement about his father’s future. During a livestream, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety read a fan comment that said, “Hope your dad coaches in the NFL.” He smiled and replied, “Yeah, that’s probably not gonna happen.” The clip, shared by the X account Gucce, quickly spread online, sparking fresh talk about Deion Sanders’ coaching plans just six months after he signed a massive deal with Colorado.

Shilo Sanders shuts down talk of Deion Sanders’ NFL coaching future

Shilo Sanders made these comments during a live Q&A session with fans, where he was asked about the prospect of Deion Sanders being in the NFL in the future, and he replied it’s not going to happen. 

As reported by Sports Illustrated, Shilo’s remarks extinguished much anticipation from fans about the likelihood of Coach Prime moving to coach an NFL team, specifically the Dallas Cowboys, at any point in the future.

ESPN reported that Deion Sanders signed a five-year, $54 million extension with the University of Colorado in March 2025. His contract keeps him in Boulder until 2029, making about $10 million for both 2025 and 2026, $11 million for both 2027 and 2028, and $12 million in 2029. 

Unless something changes dramatically, Deion Sanders’ current position will have him tied to college football for a number of years.

Deion Sanders and his sons face new challenges this season

Deion Sanders has had a tough few weeks as head coach of Colorado, as the Buffaloes are now on a three-game losing streak, 3-4 overall, 1-3 in conference, and still looking for their first road win. 

Conversely, the non-roster Shilo Sanders is still a free agent after he was waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in August, and he did visit the San Francisco 49ers in September, but he did not sign.

On the other hand, Shedeur Sanders, Deion’s younger son, is currently a backup quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. After high hopes for an early NFL Draft pick, Shedeur was chosen on Day 3 and later lost the starting job to Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel.

Even with struggles, Deion Sanders stays focused on rebuilding Colorado football. Shilo’s latest comment suggests that for now, Coach Prime’s heart and future remain firmly in college football.
