George Pickens social media outburst follows Richard Sherman’s blunt criticism after Cowboys fall to Lions

George Pickens did not stay quiet after his performance became a talking point following the Dallas Cowboys’ Thursday Night Football loss. After the Cowboys fell 44–30 to the Detroit Lions on Thursday, December 5, Pickens was criticized by former NFL star Richard Sherman. Within hours, the Dallas Cowboys wide receiver answered back on social media with an angry response. The exchange quickly went viral, turning a rough night on the field into a loud off-field moment during the middle of the NFL season.

George Pickens responds after Richard Sherman questions his effort

Richard Sherman spoke about George Pickens while breaking down the Cowboys’ loss on a postgame show following Thursday Night Football in Detroit. 

The former Seattle Seahawks cornerback made Pickens the focus of his take. Sherman said Pickens “looked uninterested” late in the game and added that a true star wide receiver cannot disappear, no matter how the game is going.

Pickens did not agree. Later that night, he posted a now-deleted Instagram story aimed directly at Sherman. 

In the post, Pickens said football is a team game and blamed the criticism on poor analysis. He wrote that former players should understand defensive coverages, double teams, and game flow before blaming one player. 

Pickens also claimed Sherman’s success came only because of Seattle’s “Legion of Boom” defense.

Pickens went even further in the message, using personal insults while telling Sherman to stop acting like an analyst who ignores how the game really works. 

The post spread quickly across social media before Pickens took it down. Neither the Cowboys nor Sherman responded directly to the post.

George Pickens’ numbers vs Detroit and Cowboys’ playoff setback

The argument followed a tough night for the Cowboys offense. George Pickens finished the game with five catches for 37 yards on nine targets against the Detroit Lions. Detroit’s defense limited his chances downfield throughout the night at Ford Field.

Other Cowboys receivers stepped up instead. CeeDee Lamb led Dallas with six catches for 121 yards. 

Ryan Flournoy also had a strong game, posting 115 receiving yards and a touchdown on nine catches. Still, the Cowboys trailed for much of the contest and could not slow Detroit’s offense.

The loss dropped Dallas to 6–6–1 and dealt a blow to its playoff hopes as the regular season winds down. 

The Cowboys are now preparing for a Week 15 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, where attention will again fall on Pickens’ role in the offense.

Richard Sherman, meanwhile, remains firm on his original point. He said effort and engagement matter most for elite receivers, especially in big games. 

As of Saturday morning, George Pickens has not followed up publicly, leaving the on-field response for Sunday rather than social media.
