In yet another IPL auction headline-breaker, Chennai Super Kings bid sharply to bag 20-year-old Prashant Veer, for a record Rs 14.20 crore. Little known among the casuals till date, the all-rounder had his steep rise in fortunes at the IPL auction as he was suddenly one of the most expensive uncapped players ever, leading to a fair bit of debate and intrigue, off the field.

Veer’s journey from a starting price of Rs 30 lakh to a multi-crore contract has been quick and meteoric. With a skill set, temperament, and game that draw parallels to that of Ravindra Jadeja, he has a “Jadeja 2.0” label and a long-term CSK investment written all over him.

Prashant Veer from UP has proven his merit over the years in the Indian domestic circuit. Veer, a left-handed batter and left-arm orthodox bowler, impressed almost a year ago for his maturity at such a young age, usually playing a role with at least one, often two, disciplines. He had a phenomenal record in domestic T20 competitions, be it state or franchise-based leagues, where he showed the ability to not only finish the games with the bat, but also control the middle overs with the ball.

Though still a newcomer at international levels, selectors and scouts were awe-struck by Veer’s athleticism, skills as an agile fielder, and great strategist. His ability, mixed with his age, provided a handy set of all desirable traits for teams wanting to add a piece to their core for years to come. Add in his calm demeanor and leadership potential at the junior and domestic levels, and Whang came across as an upside-down player well ready to take his next step.
