There are talented cricketers. And there are those who achieve talent without effort.
And our star cricketer Sanju Samson falls into the latter category.
Every time he hits a cover drive, you don’t just see the runs—you see the beauty. Yet, despite his talent, Sanju remains one of the most talked-about names in Indian cricket. Why? Let’s understand.
The boy from Kerala who dreamed big
Born on November 11, 1994, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, Sanju’s journey wasn’t a fluke. His father, Vishwanath Samson, made many sacrifices to fulfill his cricketing dreams. From junior cricket in Kerala to captaining the state team at a young age, Sanju was always considered “special.”
By the age of just 17, he had made his Ranji Trophy debut for Kerala. From the start, Sanju stood out from the typically aggressive youngsters with a calm, composed, and technically strong personality.
And then came the 2013 IPL, which changed everything.

When Sanju debuted for Rajasthan Royals in 2013, he wasn’t just a young player, but he also won the Emerging Player Award that season.
Later, he played for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and then returned to Rajasthan Royals—this time as a leader.
As captain, he:
- Silenced his critics by scoring a century in his first match as captain.
- Batting aggressively from the start
- and soon became one of RR’s most reliable batsmen.
His 119 on his captaincy debut wasn’t just an innings. It was a statement.
International Career: Talent vs. Opportunity
This is where the debate begins.
Although Sanju made his T20I debut in 2015, in the game of Indian cricket, talent alone isn’t enough—you need timing, form, and sometimes even luck.
Due to competition from players like Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Ishan Kishan, in Team India, Sanju never got the opportunity to play consistently for a long time.
This inconsistency in selection often affected his rhythm.
| Format | Matches | Runs | Highest Score | Average | Strike Rate | 100s | 50s |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ODI | 16+ | 350+ | 86 | 55+ | 100+ | 0 | 2+ |
| T20I | 25+ | 400+ | 77 | 20+ | 135+ | 0 | 3+ |
| Test | Not Debuted | — | — | — | — | — | — |
What do these numbers really say?
His ODI average is 55+, which is impressive. But the sample size is small. The real question is: has he been given enough consistent opportunities to settle in?
In T20Is, he has played impressive innings, but he hasn’t yet had the long matches to fully establish himself.
Why is Sanju Samson so different?
Some of his fans say:
“He loses his wicket quickly.”
Others say:
“He never scores consistently.”
But the truth probably lies somewhere in between.
Sanju is naturally aggressive. He trusts his gut. Sometimes this leads to great innings. Sometimes it leads to early dismissals.
But if you look at modern cricket—aggression is no longer optional.
What makes him special?
- Effortless timing
- Strong back-foot play
- Ability to score runs quickly
- Calm body language under pressure
- Smart leadership in the IPL
He doesn’t appear to be in a hurry. Even when he hits big shots, he feels in control.
Test question: Can he succeed in red-ball cricket?
Sanju hasn’t made his Test debut yet. But those who have seen him in domestic cricket know he has the technique.
He plays spin well. He has patience when needed. And he understands how to accelerate an innings.
If given a chance, he could surprise many critics.
