In an accident that almost claimed his life, India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant crashed his car while on his way from New Delhi to his home city, Roorkee, on 30 December 2022. All this happened when he hit a divider, and the car caught fire. They caused grievous injuries that included high velocity dislocation of his right knee, skin loss from neck to knees, ankle and wrist trauma that jeopardized his cricket career and the use of his right leg. But Pant, however, counter-punched. A literal life-threatening disaster that could have killed his career became a tale of astonishing grit and determination and miraculous recovery that has inspired millions of people across India.
Rishabh Pant’s accident and the fight for survival
Pant was in the car, which he was driving, when it hit a central divider, flipped, and burst into flames in the early hours of that winter morning. Thankfully, a couple of people from the town heard him and helped him and pulled him out; otherwise, he would be dead. Doctors were stunned by how badly he was hurt when he turned up at the hospital. At a later stage, orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala also confirmed that not a single ligament of Pant’s right knee was spared and that amputation was a possibility due to damage to blood vessels and nerves.

When Rishabh Pant woke up after the crash, the first thing he asked his doctors was, “Will I be able to play again?” This showed how deeply he loved the game and how strong his spirit was, even in such pain. His mother, on the other hand, could only ask, “Will he ever walk again?”– a heartbreaking question that revealed how serious his condition was and how much his family was suffering.
Rishabh Pant’s long road to recovery and triumphant return
It was a long, torturous, and uncertain journey to recovery for Pant. He went through several surgeries, ligament reconstructions, and trained at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for 14 to 16 months. Every little part, whether it was learning how to walk again or getting into light batting drills, was a workout in patience and mental toughness.
Driven by determination, Pant pushed himself beyond limits. “I asked the doctor how long it will take, he said 18 months, I told him I will reduce it by six,” Pant recalled later. He lived up to his promise and returned early. He returned to the Indian Premier League in March 2024, captaining his franchise and keeping wickets again.

The reason for his return was regarded as one of the biggest and most heart-warming stories in Indian sports. If the toasty car and Rishabh Pant could walk out in a blue jersey again, it reminds you that sport is never about records or trophies; it’s the ambiguity of the will to walk out again when life throws you down, phoenix-like.
