Rinku Singh’s parents and small-town journey: How hard work turned dreams into IPL fame

Rinku Singh was raised in the small town of Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, near the cylinder godown where his father worked to support their family. Khanchandra Singh worked as a delivery boy for LPG cylinders, and his family, including his son, lived in a two-room quarter in the godown premises. Veena Devi, his mother, helped keep the family afloat during some tough times and sacrificed whatever she could and help her son’s early cricketing dreams.

Rinku Singh grew up in a family where the financial condition was not good, but this did not stop him from getting attracted to cricket from a young age. He steps back in time; they could barely afford basic cricket gear or even covering travel expenses, as he often remembers. But the pressure he felt to give his parents a better life was ultimately what drove him. In a thought shared about his rise from rags to riches, he once said, “One thing that kept the passion alive was wanting to give my family a better life.”

Rinku Singh’s early struggles and perseverance

Rinku Singh did not have a great academic record as a child. His father has said: “His mind ticked a little slowly with regard to studies, but cricket has been his life since he was about 10 or 11.” With a meager household income, the family faced uncertainty each day, and Rinku often contemplated working small jobs to alleviate his accomplished father’s burden. There was a time he thought of working as a sweeper to help his family, but then he decided to give all his time to cricket.

Rinku persevered despite the injuries, the lack of opportunities, and career rejections in the early years. Rinku’s rise through the ranks of the age-group levels in Uttar Pradesh cricket was a story of hard work and discipline. It was those efforts that landed him in the mail box of scouts, and in the year 2018, he was signed up by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). For a boy who once practiced with borrowed bats and hand-me-down gloves, it was a crowning moment.

The breakthrough moment and his tribute to family

Rinku Singh’s breakthrough in the IPL came through his remarkable ability to stay calm under pressure and finish games for his team. His six-hitting spree and composed performances for KKR made him one of the most talked-about young cricketers in India. His consistency eventually earned him a place in the national team, fulfilling a long-held dream.

Throughout his rise, Rinku has always credited his parents for their unwavering support. He often says that his success belongs to them, especially his mother, who borrowed money from neighbors to fund his training when the family had nothing to spare. “My family had a massive role in my journey. When they didn’t have enough to support me, my mother made sure I never gave up,” he has shared in interviews.
