Former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni unfurled the green ribbon for the cutting-edge, bracket-centered Velammal Cricket Stadium on 9 October 2025, in a sprightly boost to the sports culture in the state. A large number of passionate cricket fans arrived to watch the legendary cricketer at the grand event.

The stadium comes as the latest addition to the sports infrastructure of the city, having been built by the Velammal Educational Trust in association with the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA). With its stellar facilities and contemporary amenities, it is poised to be a focal point for large-scale cricket events in the years to come, with the capacity to accommodate thousands of spectators at any point in time.

A grand welcome for MS Dhoni

Madurai came alive with thousands of fans lining up the streets to catch a glimpse of the hero, MS Dhoni. At the local airport, supporters dressed in yellow lined up with eagerness, awaiting the cricket icon’s arrival. The chants of “Dhoni, Dhoni” rang loud and clear, and when he arrived in a white car with his own number on the jersey ‘7’, their anticipation only grew further.

Stretching across 11.5 acres, the Velammal Cricket Stadium aims to become one of the best in the state of Tamil Nadu. Its seating capacity is 7,300, but the stadium was designed for a future capacity of 20,000. This gave the people of Madurai, and indeed the state, a reason to be proud. The inauguration ceremony at the new stadium brought the city amongst the various cricketing venues that are set to host mega matches.

MS Dhoni’s on-field entertainment

After the inauguration, though, the crowd was in for an extra treat as MS Dhoni, beelining towards the field, pleased the masses by walking in to bat. On his part, Dhoni apparently smashed a few towering sixes to send the crowd into a frenzy, true to form. Every hit tells us why Dhoni is still one of, if not the greatest, finishers of all time, both in the IPL and world cricket.

An uproar of applause followed as the ball went sailing past the boundaries, the cheers reverberating around the stadium. Such an exhibition of on-pitch dominance and precision not only entertained the spectators but also emphasised the enormous love for the sport among the populace. But even the Dhoni-less state at the new stadium was an affirmation of the unbreakable association Dhoni has had with fans across India.
