Kohli breaks Multiple records with Fastest 15000 ODI Runs and 86th International Ton!

Team India’s batting superstar Virat Kohli surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s greatest record by becoming the fastest to score 15,000+ ODI runs. The veteran batter achieved this feat in the series opener of the 3-match ODI series against West Indies at Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram.

On Sunday (September 27), King Kohli amassed his 86th international ton and steered his team to an 8-wicket win in a 296-run chase. His unbeaten 139-run knock off just 88 balls (4s: 10, 6s: 9, strike rate: 159.75) proved why he is hailed as the ‘Chase Master’ in white-ball cricket.

Virat’s 55th ODI century shattered multiple records set by legendary cricketers, while eclipsing his own milestones.

Second Most ODI Runs by Kohli vs Any Bowler

The crowd at Trivandrum enjoyed Virat Kohli smashing 53 runs against Alzarri Joseph, which is the second most in his ODI career against any bowler.

Most ODI runs scored by Kohli against a single bowler in an innings: 54 (vs Boult in 2016), 53 (vs Alzarri in 2026), 45 (vs Fernando in 2017), and 45 (vs Kumara in 2023).

Fastest Journey to 15,000+ ODI runs: Tendulkar vs Kohli

Considering the race to 15,000 ODI runs, Kohli reached the landmark at an older age, but required fewer innings, and after facing significantly more deliveries than Tendulkar.

However, Sachin holds the edge in terms of longevity in his ODI career, having debuted at a younger age when he was 16 years old.

Player With Most ODI Centuries vs Single Opponent

Virat Kohli has tallied his own record after scoring his 10th ODI century against West Indies. This is the most by any player against a single opponent team in the 50-over format.

  • Virat Kohli: 10 vs West Indies and Sri Lanka each.

  • Rohit Sharma and Sachin Tendulkar: 9 vs Australia (a joint-held record against the same opponent)

Most International Centuries At Home

Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar jointly hold the record for scoring 42 international centuries at home, the most by any cricketer to date.

  • Kohli and Tendulkar (INDIA): 42

  • Ricky Ponting (AUSTRALIA): 36

  • Joe Root (ENGLAND): 34

  • David Warner (AUSTRALIA): 31

  • Hashim Amla (SOUTH AFRICA): 30

Most sixes by Kohli in an ODI innings

For the first time, Virat Kohli smashed a maximum of 9 sixes in a single innings of his ODI career, surpassing his own record against Sri Lanka at the same venue in 2023.

  • 9 Sixes vs West Indies in Trivandrum (2026)

  • 8 Sixes vs Sri Lanka in Trivandrum (2023)

  • 7 Sixes vs Australia and South Africa (in Jaipur 2013 and Ranchi 2025 individually)

Joint Most International Centuries vs West Indies

Virat Kohli, who played his 74th international game against West Indies, scored 13 centuries across all formats, levelling the record of legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar. In comparison, the former opener required 38 matches to achieve this feat against the same opponent during his 16-year career that spanned from 1981 to 1987.

Other players like Jacques Kallis (12), AB de Villiers (11), and Joe Root (11) rank behind Kohli and Gavaskar in the elite list.

45% of Kohli’s ODI Centuries in Successful Run Chases

Notably, Kohli scored 55 ODI centuries, of which 25 of them have contributed to winning causes during successful run chases. Sachin and Rohit rank next in the list with 14 tons each, proving Kohli’s dominance in ODI run chases.

Joint Most ODI Centuries At Home

Virat Kohli’s 20 out of 55 ODI centuries came at home, levelling the tally of Sachin Tendulkar. Across all formats, he once again equalled the Master Blaster’s record of 42 international tons at home, achieving this feat in just 260 innings.

Leading Run Scorer in Home ODI Matches

Before the first ODI match against West Indies, Virat Kohli required only 110 runs to become the top player with the most ODI runs at home. The Delhi-born batter once again outbeat Tendulkar’s record and topped the charts.

  • Virat Kohli (131 ODIs in INDIA): 6,797 Runs

  • Sachin Tendulkar (164 ODIs in INDIA): 6,976 Runs

  • Ricky Ponting (153 ODIs in AUSTRALIA): 5,406 Runs

  • Rohit Sharma (104 ODIs in INDIA): 5,249 Runs

  • Jacques Kallis (142 ODIs in SOUTH AFRICA): 5,178 Runs

The upcoming two home ODIs against Windies give Kohli another golden chance to achieve a rare milestone. By scoring an additional 133 runs or more, he would become the world’s first player to amass 7,000+ ODI runs at home.

Why the 15,000 ODI Run Milestone is Special For Kohli?

Apart from Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar, no international batter has managed to inch closer to the 15,000-run mark in their ODI career. The King of Cricket reached this milestone faster than his idol Tendulkar in just 303 innings, becoming the second ODI batter to achieve this feat.

Ahead of the series opener, the right-handed batter was on 14,941 ODI runs and required only 59 runs to unlock the 15k milestone in his career. Also, Kohli and Tendulkar jointly share the record for scoring 20 ODI centuries at home.

Most importantly, the historic accomplishment was marked by a match-winning performance to silence critics, who questioned his form and ageing factor.

As of September 28, here are the top 5 batters with the most runs in their ODI career:

  • Sachin Tendulkar (INDIA): 18,426 Runs

  • Virat Kohli (INDIA): 15,080 Runs

  • Kumar Sangakkara (SRI LANKA): 14,234 Runs

  • Ricky Ponting (AUSTRALIA): 13,704 Runs

  • Sanath Jayasuriya (SRI LANKA): 13,430 Runs

Final Opinion: Should Kohli Play World Cup 2027?

Virat Kohli’s 86th international century not only broke several records, but also serves as a reminder of his ambitions to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup.

When it comes to high-pressure run chases, there could be no more reliable player than Kohli, who can play impactful and match-winning knocks for his team.

If performances continue to be the main criteria for selection, Virat has certainly earned the right to be part of India's 2027 ODI World Cup plans.

Finally, records may define Kohli’s legacy, but outstanding performances like these prove that he still has plenty to contribute for India in cricket’s biggest tournament.
