Is Shubman Gill returning? Major fitness update on India opener ahead of South Africa T20s

Shubman Gill is almost fully fit again, and India has added him to the T20 team for the five-match series against South Africa. This series is very important because it is India’s last test before the squad for next year’s T20 World Cup is picked. Shubman Gill hurt his neck during the Kolkata Test last month, and the BCCI said he will play “only if fully fit.” Right now, his recovery is going well, and coaches want to watch him closely before the first T20I in Cuttack on November 9.

Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya Return for Key India T20 Series

Shubman Gill had travelled to Guwahati earlier to check his fitness but was not ready at that time. Now, after a batting session at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, he looked comfortable and showed no pain. A BCCI official told reporters that doctors do not want any risk because one small mistake can make the injury worse. Gill will train more before a final call is taken on Friday.

Right now, the selectors have not named any backup opener. So if Shubman Gill needs a little more time, Sanju Samson will open with Abhishek Sharma. This shows how important Gill is at the top.

The team also gets a big boost as Hardik Pandya is back with no fitness issues. Hardik Pandya played his first match since his Asia Cup quadricep injury and hit a strong 77 not out for Baroda in the Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He also bowled all his overs, even though he was a bit expensive. With Hardik Pandya back, Nitish Reddy misses out. Shivam Dube stays as the other pace-bowling all-rounder.

There are more changes too. Rinku Singh is not in the squad because the selectors cut the team from 16 to 15 players. Rinku Singh only played in the last T20I against Australia, which was rain-hit, and he did not get to bat. Since he is a single-skill player, it may be hard for him to enter the World Cup team.

Sanju Samson, Jitesh Sharma and Rishabh Pant in Big Wicket-Keeping Fight

There is a clear fight for the wicket-keeper spot. Sanju Samson’s old top-order hundreds do not matter much anymore because Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma are the main openers now. The team also likes Jitesh Sharma because he can finish games very well in the lower order. India also has Tilak Varma, who adds good fielding and off-spin along with his batting.

Rishabh Pant is still in the mix too. If any player fails, Pant can come into the World Cup plan. Sanju Samson is useful because he can open and also keep, but he sat out the full 2024 T20 World Cup and will hope to play more now.

India’s bowling group, led by Jasprit Bumrah, looks set. The final World Cup squad for the February 7 to March 8 tournament in India and Sri Lanka will be picked after this South Africa series.
