End of an era? Poor form in Australia casts shadow over Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli’s 2027 World Cup ambitions

All doubts over the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have done little to subdue doubts over their futures upon their return to the Indian cricket fold in the opening ODI of the tour of Australia. In Perth, both batters failed to make an impression, as Rohit managed only 8 runs and Kohli walked off on a duck, with their poor outing raising serious questions about their ability to take India’s World Cup hopes into 2027.

Comeback trail gets tougher for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

After long and highly anticipated wait, Rohit and Kohli returned to one-day international action in Perth, both making underwhelming contributions. Rohit’s innings was off to a sparkling start with a rich cover drive but reached its end in quick time with an outside edge to first slip to highlight the rustiness associated with his lay-off. Kohli managed just eight balls before falling without scoring.

Their struggles were not in isolation as the whole Indian top order folded in a manner eerily reminiscent of the 2019 World Cup heartbreak. It has thus reopened debate – for two players, till recently considered the backbone of India’s batting line-up, whether they still possess the consistency and razor-sharpness for big ticket tournaments.

Doubts grow over 2027 World Cup plans

The candid confessions of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to continue being a part of India’s 2027 ODI World Cup setup have not really convinced the experts and the selectors. Former India coach Ravi Shastri said, “Everything depends on fitness, hunger, and form,” as he made it clear that this Australia series holds significance for both veterans. 

Even head coach Gautam Gambhir has spoken to the effect that although experience will continue to come in handy, the focus needs to be on current form and the next generation of players. Adding further to the uncertainty, several analysts feel that India’s ODI team is about to enter a transitional phase, especially with the likes of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal pressing for permanent places.

Their ages are also perking up, Rohit might be 40 years old and Kohli 39 in 2027, and thus selectors may look more at the future rather than staying stuck in the past. With the local tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy and more international series around to judge their fitness and regularity, their spots in the long-term setup are anything but secure. In short, early indications from this series are that the road ahead for this iconic Indian pair is going to be quite uphill. A journey that appeared comfortable toward the 2027 World Cup has suddenly become a question mark, and unless they get back to their great whites on time, this could well be not only a performance dip but the silent end of an era in Indian cricket.
