CSK IPL 2026 Auction Preview: Squad analysis, strategy and key reinforcements needed

Chennai Super Kings are gearing up for the IPL 2026 auction with a total of ₹43.40 crore to spend and nine positions to fill, including four for international players. Historically, the franchise has depended on a solid balance and depth for success, but this year’s competition is tougher. 

The top order is pretty much set with Ayush Mhatre, Sanju Samson, and Ruturaj Gaikwad ensuring stability, while Shivam Dube and Dewald Brevis contribute flexibility and power.

MS Dhoni’s influence remains strong, even when he’s at the tail end of the batting lineup. The real hurdle for CSK, though, is going to be reconstructing the middle order and death bowling after letting go of Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to bring in Samson.

A senior official from CSK mentioned to Sportstar that “the brief is tricky but clear: two all-rounders with contrasting skill sets,” pointing out the franchise’s aim to acquire one spin-bowling all-rounder and one pace-bowling all-rounder.

It’s not only about balance; it’s also about tackling a big weakness. CSK ended last season with the worst death-overs run rate in the league, which highlights the need to find bowlers who can finish innings effectively.

Nathan Ellis is the only specialist death bowler in the squad right now, and since Matheesha Pathirana has been released, CSK needs to find a replacement. Insiders told Sportstar that bringing Pathirana back would be a smart move if the cost is reasonable.

The team’s success in finding a bowler without breaking the bank will be key to figuring out if they can get back into the competition.

Spin is another pressing issue. With Jadeja gone and R. Ashwin retired, Shreyas Gopal is the only finger-spin option available. Firstpost noted that CSK’s management is expected to pursue a spinner who fits their control-first philosophy, a hallmark of the franchise’s approach over the years.
