Asian Games 2026: Afghanistan’s Dream Ends in Heartbreak After Second Consecutive Washout Elimination
Afghanistan’s campaign in the Men’s Asian Games 2026 ended abruptly as they were eliminated from the tournament. Heavy rain at the Korogi Sports Park in the quarter-final against India forced the match to be abandoned without a single ball being bowled.
Based on ICC T20I world rankings in men’s cricket, India advanced into the next rounds and will face off against Sri Lanka in the second semi-final on October 01 (Thursday).
Unfortunately, this marks the second consecutive edition for Afghanistan to face a heartbreaking result with yet another rain-affected game.
The outcome is reminiscent of what happened three years back at the Hangzhou Asian Games 2023, when rain played a spoiler and denied Afghans a fair chance of securing glory against India in the final.
Painful Repeat of the 2023 Asian Games
An elimination in the ongoing season was harsh to accept because Afghanistan suffered a similar rain-induced heartbreaking match against the same opponent in the past edition.
The Afghans had a memorable run in the 2023 Asian Games before the rain intervened in the final. They qualified for the title clash by defeating Sri Lanka (by 8runs) and Pakistan (by 4wickets) in the quarter-final and semi-final, respectively. They were just one win short of achieving their maiden gold medal in men’s cricket at the Asian Games.
Unlike the abandoned quarter-final, Afghans had a chance to make a fightback against India in the 2023 final as they compiled 112/5 in 18.3 overs before rain interfered.
Promising Asian Games 2026 Campaign Cut Short
After concluding as the silver medalists for three consecutive editions (in 2010, 2014, and 2023), Afghanistan entered the men’s cricket Asian Games 2026 with high hopes of winning their first-ever gold medal.
There were several instances where the national team challenged stronger opponents and secured victories against them in marquee tournaments. For instance, the Afghans' 21-run win against the Aussies in the T20 World Cup 2024 proved that they are a respectable force in the cricket world.
Upset After Progressing from Preliminary Round
Unlike India, which gained direct qualification into the knockouts based on the seeding concept, Afghanistan had to progress from the preliminary stages of the tournament.
Afghanistan started their Asian Games 2026 journey by triumphing over the host nation Japan by 48 runs. Despite a 5-wicket loss to Nepal, their points and Net Run Rate (NRR) were enough for them to progress from the group stages, and they were set to challenge India in the quarter-final with their quality spin bowling attack.
Harsh Nature of the High-Profile Tournaments
A majority of key tournaments are operated under specific playing conditions to ensure teams progress smoothly into subsequent rounds after abandoned matches. The short timeline to host matches has not only caused scheduling constraints but also leaves little space for reserve days.
According to the rules, the higher-ranked team progresses into subsequent rounds when a knockout fixture is abandoned without a result due to unfavorable weather conditions.
In Afghanistan’s case, the ICC Men’s T20I rankings turned out to be a threat as they were ranked 10th. On the other hand, India as the No. 1-ranked team and the reigning T20 World Cup champions, gained automatic qualification.
Even though the rules are implemented perfectly, the under-ranked teams suffer harsh consequences.
Overall Opinion
Unfortunately for Afghanistan, their fate was not determined based on their top-notch preparation, skill, and determination. Rather, the ICC T20I rankings and heavy rain showers at the Korogi Sports Park became their biggest enemy.
Without any dramatic chase, high-intensity finishes, and match-winning bowling spells, the recent outcome has sparked debates among fans and experts.
Conclusively, the consecutive editions of Asian Games in 2023 and 2026 will remain painful memories for Afghanistan and will aim for a stronger comeback.
